Research summary:
Beside its function as a biological barrier for infection, the immune system participates in multiple cellular process involved in tissue homeostasis during development, post-natal growth, regeneration/repair, and ageing. To do this, immune cells strongly interact with tissue-resident cells, such as Mesenchymal Progenitor (MPs). This is a two-way relationship, as MPs are also required to maintain organ function and tissue integrity, by strongly influencing immune cells inflammatory function. For example, a stable type 2 inflammatory (Th2) environment is an important, yet underestimated, parameter required for successful tissue maintenance. Indeed, white adipose tissue (WAT) resident MPs are responsible for the maintenance of a Th2 environment within the WAT at homeostasis. While the immune functions of MPs are actively studied, the signalling pathways involved in their regulation, which are likely to provide potential therapeutic targets, are so far poorly understood. MPs are the main cellular component of the tissue interstitial. Their role is to maintain the tissue homeostasis at resting state, but they are also crucial to keep the tissue integrity after a damage. While their function toward the ECM is well known, these cells have been more recently described as a key player of the inflammation.
During my PDF training, I have studied the implication of various signalling pathways involved on the inflammatory fate of the MPs.
Personal Summary:
Before moving to Vancouver, I would have described myself as a city person, enjoying museums, movies, and the night life. But the great outdoors of BC converted me to the west-coast life style (meaning that I cannot spend 2 days in a row without going to the gym, running, swimming, biking, hiking, camping, or driving across the province for a weekend). However (or luckily) my dry French humour is still very strong, and I still spend 60% of my time complaining.
