Research Summary:
To ensure successful muscle regeneration after damage, the function of muscle stem cells (MuSCs) needs to be coordinated with multiple other cell types, which is achieved by a complex web of interactions. In particular, macrophages (MPs) act on the proliferation, survival and differentiation of both MuSCs and a second tissue resident cell, the fibro/adipogenic precursor (FAP). Muscle-resident FAPs in turn provide trophic support to MuSCs and influence the function of MPs. Alteration of MPs function or FAPs fate impairs skeletal muscle regeneration and leads to fibro-fatty degeneration, typical of chronic damage such as seen in repeated traumas or in muscular dystrophies. Nevertheless, little is known about the signaling pathways involved in the response of FAPs to inflammatory molecules. Here, I propose to: 1) take advantage of newly developed transgenic tools to alter TGFb signaling in FAPs and 2) investigate the effects that such alteration induces on muscle homeostasis.

Personal Summary:
I am a dynamic person. I like playing sport for fun, travelling to discover new cities, landscapes and people. I enjoy being outside and I can spend lots of time just looking at the ocean.
